1. REGISTRATION
Applicable only to students and personnel who belong to the University. Students are not required to register because their ID card is to be used as a library card as well. Those who have a card for Sentan-Igaku-Kenkyu-Kiko(The Organization for Advanced Medical Research; formerly So-Ken, Laboratories for Medical Research), please come to the library Main Desk and have a library bar-code sticker added to your card. For users other than the above two, a library card, either temporary or perpetual, is issued upon application.

2. READING
Materials in the reading room and stacks can be accessed and used without any restriction.
Please return them to the original places when you are through with them.
Bags, coats and other large belongings must be put into a locker.
Eating, drinking and smoking are prohibited.

3. CIRCULATION

Available only to students and personnel who belong to the university

( 1 ) CHECK-OUT

Please offer at the main desk books and journals to be borrowed together with your library card. Up to five materials can be checked out at a time.
Unless materials are appropriately checked out, the BDS(book detection system) works and gives an alarming sound at the entrance gate.

( 2 ) LOAN PERIODS

Books, bound journals and, non-bound journals published more than two years ago: Two weeks
Current (Non-bound) journals : Overnight (4:30pm - 10:00am, next library day)
Dictionaries : Not circulated

4. PENALTIES

When checked-out materials are not returned for more than two weeks after the date due, users' library card is invalidated. This means you cannot borrow materials or enter the library building during unattended library hours.

5. REFERENCE SERVICES

( 1 ) CONSULTATION

Please feel free to come to the Main Desk and ask for help when you:

* don't know how to locate materials you are looking for.
* would like to know bibliographic items such as authors, titles, journal names, volumes, numbers, pages and publication years.
* would like to obtain information about organizations or researchers.
* would like to find books or special issues of journals about topics of your interest.
* would like to obtain the articles which our library doesn't have.

( 2 ) INTERNET SEARCHING

Medicine-related information on the Internet can be searched without charge on four PCs. Papers for printing are to be prepared by users.
Linked homepages are as follows:
a) Our library's homepage
b) PubMed(MEDLINE):
A database of journal articles in medical and related sciences covering all over the world, offered free by the National Library of Medicine, USA. Accessible from your home too.
c) Igaku Chuo Zasshi (Japana Centra Revuo Medicina):
A medical database specializing on journals published in Japan.
e) Current Contents :
A publication providing tables of contents of newly published journals, abstracts also available. Updated weekly. One PC can be used. Sections available are:
  • Life Sciences
  • Clinical Medicine

( 3 ) ONLINE SEARCHING (ACTUAL COSTS TO BE COVERED BY USERS)

Current and retrospective information of all kinds covering the whole world is available through online databases. Library staff conducts searching on the following databases for your topics.
Service hours : 9:00am - 5:00pm (excluding the lunch time = 12:00pm - 1:00pm)
a) DIALOG (G-SEARCH) :
All fields including medicine-related databases such as EMBASE, BIOSIS, CA Search (Chemical Abstracts) etc.
b) NACSIS-IR (NII; National Institute of Informatics, Japan):
SCI (Science Citation Index), Kagaku Kenkyuhi Hojokin(Grant-in-Aid Scientific Research, Japan) etc.

( 4 ) PHOTOCOPY SERVICES (ACTUAL COSTS TO BE COVERED BY USERS)

Photocopying can be done by users themselves. Both monochrome and color copying are offered. Please fill out the application form and read carefully the backside notices concerning copyright laws.
Copying fees can also be covered by a prepaid card which is to be issued by Kosai-dan.

( 5 ) INTERLIBRARY LOANS (ACTUAL COSTS TO BE COVERED BY USERS)

Photocopies of articles not found in the university can be obtained from other organizations within about one week.
When they are not available in Japan, their photocopies can be ordered from USA and UK, taking usually 2-4 weeks.

6. UNATTENDED LIBRARY HOURS

Your library card must be used to enter the library building during the unattended hours.
