Prof. Takaki have for the first time revealed the direct interaction of the extrinsic nerve and myenteric neurons in the guinea-pig small intestine using capsaicin, which is a drug tool stimulating specifically the sensory nerves as shown below.

We are now deveoping studies on effects of mesenteric nerve (extrinsic nerve) stimulation on the ileum motility (mediated via the intrinsic nerves) in the guinea pig and rat.
The interaction of enteric nervous system and interstitial cells of Cajal (c-kit positive cells) (ICC cells) also has been reported. ICC cells are thought to be pace-maker cells of gut motility. We are going to develop these findings in our studies. In near future, Hirsprung disease model rats or c-kit gene deficient model rats will be used.
