We analyze various biological phenomena exhibited by ES cells and iPS cells, particularly through the utilization of forward genetics. Forward genetics is a method that allows researchers to explore the function of genes without arbitrary intervention. Based on unexpected discoveries obtained with this method, we aim to develop new research fields.

- We have reported that a genetic mutation in Smarce1, one of the subunits of the chromatin remodeling complex, induces chromatin instability in mouse ES cells（Kashiwagi et al. J Cell Sci). This finding was discovered through screening the homozygous mutant mouse ES cell bank that we previously reported. It is featured in the Research Highlights of the same issue.
