This department conducts research using animal models, molecular and histochemical methods, behavioral analysis, and various other techniques to explore the mechanisms of neurological and cardiovascular disorders caused by social or physical stress, as well as the treatment of diseases associated with these disorders.

In Japan, cerebrovascular disease, commonly known as stroke, has long been the leading cause of death. With the treatment of hypertension, which is the primary cause of the disease, the number of deaths from it is decreasing. However, due in part to the westernization of our food culture, cerebrovascular disease continues to develop in a certain number of people, making some patients still suffer from the aftereffects of the disease, and engage in rehabilitation daily. In the modern era, mental disorders associated with social stress and other factors are also being addressed. We aim for research that is useful for the elucidation of the molecular principles of these disorders and their treatment.
